Laundry room counter, sink and faucet

All Posts, Laundry Room

In addition to installing lights in the office this weekend, Wes and I also got the laundry room countertop, sink and faucet installed.  Woohoo!  I was super excited to have the countertop in there so I could fold laundry — but the finish still stinks so I haven’t used it yet.

countertops with tung oil

The countertop is 2x stock.  I bought it and brought it in the house weeks before I built the countertop so it could dry out.  I used a bunch of different colors of stain and finished the countertop with Tung Oil.  The Tung oil is STINKY!  (I’ll do a full tutorial soon.)

I installed my sink with a bit more of a reveal than you would normally see but it’s part of my plan.  I plan on using that reveal as a ledge to hold the countertop cutout so I still have the whole countertop to fold clothes on.  The faucet is installed in the back corner for the same reason — So it doesn’t get in the way.

pullout faucet
The main reason we wanted a sink in the laundry room at all is more for a dog bath than anything — so I made sure to purchase a pullout faucet.

I didn’t want stainless because I’m sure it will get scratched but it was really hard to find a sink that fit the dimensions I wanted with this shape (which I wanted so I could install the faucet where I did).  So stainless it is.  I’ll just have to put a towel in the bottom before I bath Brody.

Speaking of Brody, I tried putting him up on the counter and in the sink, just to try it out, and he was scared to death!

Not sure if it was because it was all new or because the countertop still stinks or both.

Probably both, but he’ll have to get used to it because this is his new bath!

Sink:  Kraus, stainless steal, undermount sink

Faucet:  Kraus, single lever, pull out, kitchen faucet

What a great idea to save the insert to extend your counter space! It’s looking great.

Aww poor Brody! Give him cuddles from me. The countertop and sink look great! And you were so scared to cut into it! 🙂

AWESOME. I’m totally jealous of how huge your laundry room is. Although, I am very happy to actually HAVE a laundry room now, and on the second floor no less! No sink, but I’ve got storage and a place for the ironing board to hang, and a door to CLOSE on the mess!

The sink is great, but I’m sure Brody disagrees. I’m sure if I had a less-than-tub-sized-dog she would agree too. Though she thinks the bathroom is the devil.

Your counter top looks AMAZING. I’m totally wowed by it. And it’s all glue holding it together, right? You didn’t end up using any hardware to keep it joined? I’m sad that the finish is so stinky. Pure tung oil is great — it has a smell to it, but it’s not a bad, unhealthy smell. It’s like the inside of a well-oiled baseball mitt. I used it on my daughter’s hardwood floors and I love it. I think it’s just when tung oil is turned into tung oil “finish” like Waterlox that it has to be mixed up with hardeners and solvents — that’s when it gets nasty. It looks amazing, though!

Your countertop and sink look just great. Lots of hard work to get to this point. Awww…I feel for little Brody…could his association of the laundry room have anything to do with all those “naughty/nasty” words Mommy was using in there when she spilled that paint???

LOL! Poor Brody, he probably thought it was the vet’s office in his own home. Loving that countertop, but glad you didn’t install the Smellovision Plug in yet to your blog ;-D

I love the huge amount of space you have!! I know not many people iron anymore (I love it lol) but do you have room for that in your design? and don’t they make small rubber bath mats? that might work better than a towel it won’t move around.

    Hey Sandra,
Has any one figured out what is the best technique for painting grout? I really need the answer to that question.
