We used 1/2″ pine plywood sheets purchased through a local building supply. You could certainly use the flimsy mdf sheets. In that case, I would use a lot of liquid construction adhesive in addition to the nails to prevent sagging.

We have a huge vaulted ceiling covered in popcorn! Did you like the shine of the ceiling? I’m guessing you did them in gloss? Thanks!
